TRAINING TRAINERS: “How to Train Others to Make Disciples”

“make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe (obey) all things that I have commanded you.  And lo, I am with you always, even to the ends of the age”
Matthew 28:18-20

That mandate was issued to all of His followers.  Every person who claims allegiance to Jesus Christ has been ordered to “make disciples.” God draws people unto Himself for entering into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  Once they respond to the Gospel and are saved, they need to receive training towards spiritual maturity.  There may be more people around us than we realize who are saved, or very close to being saved, and are ripe unto being “discipled” by a “disciple maker.” Further, there are many Christians in our churches who are mature and strong in their faith and walk with Jesus Christ.  These same Christians also know the basics of what it means to know Christ, abide in Him, serve Him and to even function as His witnesses.  However, what they may not know is how to actually begin meeting with a newer Christian to pass along the spiritual truths and lessons they have acquired.

The below manual (‘222’ - 11 Discipleship Studies) is being provided initiate the one-on-one discipleship process. The name ‘222’ is an abbreviation taken from 2 Timothy 2:2 where the apostle Paul instructs Timothy, his younger protoge’,  “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses (teaching and instruction), commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” It is clear that once Timothy received spiritual instruction from Paul, he is then charged to provide that same instruction to some other “faithful men” who are then supposed to teach and train additional men:

  • It begins with Paul being the ‘discipler’ and Timothy is the ‘disciple’

  • then Timothy becomes the ‘discipler’ and other men are the ‘disciples’

  • then the other men become the ‘disciplers’ and additional men are the ‘disciples’.

Paul to Timothy to Other Men to Additional Menthat is how discipleship works!

Wouldn’t it be great if every follower of Jesus Christ learned the Bible for the purpose of obedience and spiritual growth in faith and service?  What would a church look like where all of the more mature members were coming alongside of the younger and less mature believers for the purpose of MAKING STRONG DISCIPLES?
